Every day at The Correspondent we strive to produce great journalism – and that includes innovative imagery.
As an image editor, I am always on the lookout for new illustrators, photographers, artists and other creatives to collaborate with. And I’ve been looking for you everywhere.
At exhibitions, festivals and fairs; in newspapers, magazines and bookstores; on social media and blogs and in newsletters; in portfolios that I find in my mailbox, or even just in conversations with anyone and everyone.
Because here at The Correspondent, we like to work with a great variety of creatives from all around the world, in many different ways. Sometimes a project or image creator turns out to be a perfect fit for a specific story. Now and again, a creator is matched to a correspondent for a whole series. Sometimes, an existing project fits a story or beat perfectly. Or every so often, the images are the story.
After all, the best productions happen when a correspondent collaborates with an image creator already interested in their specific subject. So I’m always looking for that perfect combination of correspondent, creative and subject.
The creatives I’m looking for have a signature style because the visual language of our journalism can be as diverse as our correspondents and their beats. You won’t just be creating images to match someone else’s point-of-view. You’ll be adding your own perspective to a story.
Are you who I’m looking for?
I originally trained as a photographer, so I know it can be difficult to figure out who to speak to when you’re looking for assignments and collaborations. The aim of this portfolio day is to lower that threshold to be able to find new, exciting voices to enrich our journalism!
Maybe you have a concrete plan for a story. Maybe you just want to show me what you make. Maybe you have a correspondent in mind who you’d like to work with. Because once we get to know each other, it’ll be easier to collaborate on future projects!
Write to me!
Send me your portfolio and tell me what you’d like to talk about. Please make a representative selection of images (maximum 10), give a brief description (maximum 200 words), and be specific about what you would like to discuss and why you think you are a good match with our journalism.
This portfolio day will take place on 8 September.
Fill out this form to apply for the portfolio day! Make sure to write to me before 30 August! A selection of people will be invited for a half hour conversation via Zoom. I’ll let you know if you’re invited before 5 September.I’m looking forward to seeing your work!
Are you reading this callout too late? No specific ideas right now? Don’t worry. We’ll continue organising these kinds of days regularly. Just keep an eye on our site and our social media channels.
